Sideways returns next year! The festival will be celebrated from Thursday 13th to Saturday 15th of June 2024. Friendly Bird tickets for next Summer are now on sale. The 3-day tickets are sold for 149 EUR until Wednesday at 11.59AM. This is the lowest price this ticket type will be sold for. Get yours from our ticket shop! 

Sideways 2023 has ended, and the festival weekend gather all together 25 000 visitors. The last festival day was celebrated at a nearly sold-out Nordis, when 9500 of you showed up. The festival was a perfect way to start the Summer.

We want to thank all festival visitors, artists, volunteers, members of staff, and partners. Stay tuned for festival news!

Once again, Sideways festival area will be filled with visual art. This year, the festival will showcase immersive UV art by Avaruusdisco (Riikka Arte and Sir Michael Madness), Christian Sjöholm’s interactive AI installation, Joachim Roncinc’s Slava Ukraini banner that keeps reminding about the on-going crisis and our possibilities to act, soap bubble masters Kuplakopla, touchable sculptures by Luovilla workshop, and large paintings created by artist/activist Nora Helsinki and artist/graphic designer Pia Iiramo. 

We recommend you to leave some time to wander around Nordis to find and enjoy all the artworks. More info about the artists and their works can be found on our sideshow site. 

This year also CGI has developed a mobile application for Sideways, which allows you to conveniently carry all the necessary event information in your pocket. In the application you can find e.g. schedules, event information and introductions about artists, sidewshows and restaurants. By logging in, you can optimize your Sideways experience by creating a personalized schedule so that you don't miss any must-see gigs. Sideways will take place next week and all up-coming sideshows are now announced. Newest additions are the RFSU’s panel discussion that addresses sexual pleasure and orgasms, and YleX Kohupodi’s live podcast, where the hosts Renaz Ebrahimi and Sini Laitinen set up a humoristic cancel corner to analyze the audience’s faux pas so to speak. We also recently told that some possibly awkward memories will be shared in the live Päiväkirjaklubi (Diary Club). 

Other, previously announced sideshows such as karaokes, arcade, pop quiz and so on can be found on our website. Sideshow schedules are also ready. Take a look at them and start making your gameplan, gates open soon!

This year’s Sideways merchandise is printed at the festival by Carlings. At the festival store, clients get to pick a print and a product from a selection, and they will be printed while waiting. The selection consists of different short and long-sleeved shirts and a tote bag. The artworks can also be printed on your own piece of clothing.

Manufacturing merchandise this way allows customers to decide who they look, but also reduces waste.

Wristband exchange will be handled at the festival gates and the Carlings store at the shopping mall Kamppi. All info and schedules can be found below. After the wristband exchange at Carlings closes, tickets can be changed to wristbands at Nordis, next to the main gate.

A small batch of Sideways products will be manufactured in advance and sold at the wristband exchange in the Carlings store at Kamppi. The same products are available at Sideways, so no worries!

Please note that 2-day Friday+Saturday tickets are changed only at the wristband exchange next to the festival gate from Fri 9.6.2023 onwards. One-day tickets are not exchanged.

Sideways and the city of Helsinki have started a collaboration to advance responsibility. Collaboration will consist of different projects and tools to promote e.g. ecological and social responsibility.

To Sideways and Helsinki it is important that each festival visitor feels save and accepted as they are. Our collaboration seeks for this to apply to all events. According to Sideways’ customer feedback, our visitors feel easy to attend to Sideways as they are, and the possibility to do so is one of our most important values. The work is still not complete, and we will continue as long as it’s needed. For us, you are perfect the way you are!

The collaboration with the city of Helsinki will also include e.g. a carbon footprint calculator, which among other tools helps to evaluate the effects of event production. In addition to this, we will pilot and develop a larger project in the field of social responsibility.

Sideways X Helsinki collaboration will continue and expand after this year’s festival, and more about this will be announced at a later stage.

Here’s the versatile and summery bar selection! Many old and new favorite drinks are served by our friend Brooklyn Brewery, that drives to Nordis as what appears to be a New York subway, nine different but equally fresh cocktails serving Cocktail Circus, X-Berg Wine Bar whose wine selection expands with MUK-1 Wine Truck and the incredibly cute Rosecco-Seat, and Spritz Bar that serves you cocktails topped with fresh berries and fruits. In addition to these, you can visit the pastel-colored, low and no-alcohol drinks mastering Kåska Bar, the festival’s name drink serving Schweppes Cocktail Bar, and Karhu Kota where you can celebrate Finnish social rituals while enjoying a fresh beer. 

And let’s not forget that all the other Sideways Bars around the festival area serve a large variety of different beverages. Non-alcoholic drinks are served at every single bar at Sideways. 

No panic, we have all weekend to try these!

Päiväkirjaklubi is a phenomenon that sells out halls all over Finland. Now the Päiväkirjaklubi is coming to Sideways' Royal Club! On the club's stage, you will hear the authentic comments of four readers about what it was like to live as a Finnish teenager at the end of the last millennium. There will be identification, togetherness, laughter, embarrassment, sympathy and even charm.

At Päiväkirjaklubi, former teenagers, now grown-up self-aware sadists, have been sharing their writings with the public since 2014. Not only diary entries but also love letters, school subjects and poems have been read at the clubs. The evening always ends with the Noloi teiniruno-battle, the winner of which is chosen by the audience. The more embarrassing, the better!

A book has also been published about the club's best texts (Eeva Vekki & Risto K. Järvinen: Päiväkirjaklubi. Nemo, 2019).

Sideways’ music line-up has gotten one more addition as the Swiss-Ecuadorian guitar duo Hermanos Gutiérrez have agreed to charm everyone at Nordis.
 
Inspired by rough wilderness, spaghetti western, Morricone and Lynch, and 50s Latin music, the two brothers describe their music as a roadtrip through deserts and coasts, driven towards sunsets and sunrises. Anyone ready to sign up? The trip begins at Black Box on Saturday 10th of June!
 
In addition to these news, we regret to inform that Panda Bear & Sonic Boom have been forced to cancel their performance in Sideways.

First time ever Sideways Festival promotes also a pre-party at the festival week, where American bedroom-pop singer-songwriter Alex G performs at Tavastia on Tuesday 6th June. We have tried to get Alex G to perform at Sideways for a while, but there has been some schedule difficulties. But as a pre-party before the Sideways, the artist's first gig in Finland works perfectly!
 
Alex Giannascoli came to the attention of the general public at the latest with his third self-published album "Trick", which was released in 2012 and collected more than 200 million streams. The album, which contained honest raw guitar sounds, combined a relaxed lofi aesthetic with indie rock. In recent years the artist has become very popular on TikTok as well.
 
Giannascoli's ninth album, "God Save The Animals", released last fall, cruises even more boldly in the flow of different genres, from electronic sounds to folk tones. It received rave reviews all over the world and earned e.g. Pitchfork's "Best New Music" rating. During his career, Giannascoli has also collaborated with e.g. With Japanese Breakfast, Frank Ocean and most recently Lil Yachty on his brand new album "Let's Start Here".
 
In the spring and summer, the artist stars at the Coachella, Primavera and Best Kept Secret festivals, among others, arriving in Helsinki's Tavastia in between. Tickets for these memorable Sideways tours are sold by Tiketti!

When considering buying an open day ticket, we recommend to make the purchase decision quickly. The sale of open day tickets end on Sunday 14th of May of this week at 11.59PM.  

It is also possible to extend the one-day and two-day tickets you with a ticket upgrade. If you have bought a day ticket but would like to stay for more days at Sideways, it is possible with the ticket upgrade. You can find more information on our ticket sales page.

As usual, Sideways hosts Summer’s best karaoke parties where you, dear guests, get to be the stars. On Friday and Saturday nights you will get to party at Sideways Sunset Karaoke and performs bangers curated to fit the festival.

Misheard Lyrics Karaoke will make you sing and laugh on Friday. Warning: Only the misheard parts of the songs are available, so the tempo might surprise you…

TV-show Theme Karaoke was a great hit last year, and now it is back with new songs! Feel free to perform you favorites, with lyrics or without.

Remember to warm up you vocal cords during the day! This will be epic.

Once again, Sideways after parties can be found at the festival site, in the Basement. This year’s theme is without a doubt nostalgia. 
 
On Friday, a very special DJ battle will take place, when Helsinki and Tampere’s K-30 Club vs K40-disco battle to find out who’s the champion of indie and pop discos. Helsinki will be represented by DJs Harvest and Aleksi. Tampere will send DJs Sami and Antti to the ring. We’ve heard rumors, that at least the bangers ”Dancing On My Own”, ”Enjoy the Silence”, ”Pump Up The Jam”, and ”Sweet Dreams” will be played. 
 
Saturday night culminates in a millenium spectacle, when Icons Club goes Y2k special plays all the greatest hits from the turn of the century. So prepare to dance to Christina Aguilera, Ricky Martin, and so on.. 
 
So no need to leave too soon people. Remember to wear your dancing shoes! 

Sideways is known for offering a great variety of quality food, and this year is no exception.

The carefully curated selection includes Sideways Burger, Seksico Tacos, Fat Ramen, Loaded Fries & Nachos, Sushibar+Wine, Sideways Slices, Herkkä Hot Dog, Casa Moro, Lilly’s Pita, MoMo House, and Khaosan. You can find detailed descriptions of all the restaurants here.

As stated last year, no meat or fish is served at Sideways, and all the restaurant serve vegan options. More food and drink news are still to come so stay tuned!

If you have bought a one- or two-day ticket to Sideways, but you would like to be at the festival for more days, it is now easier than ever to upgrade your tickets! We have opened for sale a Ticket upgrade, by purchasing which you can extend the validity of your current Sideways ticket by one or two days.

You can redeem one additional day for Sideways for 60 euros or two additional days for 90 euros. The price of the Upgrade ticket is always the same, regardless of the price you bought your original 1-2 day ticket.

Please note that the upgrade ticket alone does not entitle you to enter the festival area. You also need a normal Sideways ticket.

Sideways Festival’s 2023 line-up is now ready after the addition of  more than ten new names. 

New international acts are alternavite and indie rock producing, The Guardian’s ones-to-watch listed Billy Nomates (UK), grunge, trap, and shoegaze combining Sorry (UK), and afro-psychedelic futuristic pop performing BCUC (ZA) who fluently use all 11 official South African languages. 

Also the Sideways stages will be taken by the Swedish synth pop duo Kite (SE), hip hop, gothic literature inspired post-rock group Algiers (US), New York based, ethereal indie pop’s rising star eee gee (DK), acoustic and eletric music together binding Kali Malone (US), and pop artist Maja Francis, who recently opened the night at a First Aid Kit concert in Helsinki. Progressive rock fans previously charmed Sven Wunder (SE) will entertain Sideways goers with their world-touring DJ set. 

Domestic guitar music to Sideways is brought by Ruissalo Amping, Vuoret, Dragsvik, and Mahti. The versatility of the line-up is supplemented by electronic music guru Kaukolampi, electronic drum-loops to jazz combining Teddy Rok: Atonal Drums, and lo-fi beats with 80´s & 90´s dance music utilizing Ty Roxy. 

After the record-breaking year 2022, Sideways continues to offer both a versatile musical line-up and surprising side shows, of which the immersive theater collective 00100ENSEMBLE’s home alone simulator is already announced. The rest of the side shows will be announced during the Spring.

Sideways is looking for volunteers for Summer 2023. As a volunteer you get to help arrange a successful and memorable festival in varying tasks. You will also get to see what happens behind the scenes at a festival, gather important work experience, and meet new people.

We will check the applications as they’re coming in, and book jobs as we find suitable people. The most popular tasks are booked fastest, so apply quickly to get the task you’d rather like. The application forms are open until May, or until we’ve booked all places.

Helsinki-based rap artist, poet, and artisstic multi talent Paperi T returns to Sideways!

Originally known from the cult-like phenomenon Ruger Hauer, Paperi T became a generational experience after the album ”Malarian pelko” and the poetry book ”Post alfa”. Now, after almost 50 million streams and multiple awards, the artist has spent some time outside stages, but now our wait is coming to an end. Paperi T will perform at Sideways on Thursday the 8th of June.

Right on time before the festival, Paperi T releases the next studio album ”Joka päivä jotain katoaa”.

Performance dates for all musical acts are here! The lineup has also six next names.

The latest international artist additions are previously known Savage band vocalist, punk-character, and singer-songwriter Jehnny Beth (FR), versatile flow and black humor utilizing rapper Billy Woods (US) and space-jazz-trio The Comet Is Coming (UK), who are finally coming back to Finland.

The latest domestic additions are brought to Nordis by WÖYH!, Ada Aik and Good Boys. 

Unfortunately, from the previously announced artists Adrian Younge & Ali Shaheed Muhammad and Sunset Rollercoaster have cancelled their European tour, and therefore their performances at Sideways.

Sideways is looking for restaurants to operate at the festival on June 8th-10th 2023. We offer both tent and food truck places. As before, Sideways’ food options will only include vegetarian and vegan dishes.

We will book approx. 10 restaurants that mainly serve high-quality street food, but we’re also always open for new ideas!

KÄTY (short from kämppä tyhjänä) is the term being home alone without your parents. And that can only mean one thing: a house party! So dig out you Juicy Coutures and other party outfits. The third collaboration between 00100ENSEMBLE and Sideways festival brings the house party atmosphere familiar from late 90’S and early 2000´s to today. 

We invite everyone to refresh their home party memories, when the bottles in the parents' bar cabinet dilute at the same pace as the atmosphere around the party thickens. What do you do when the phone rings and dad calls?  The best party of the summer takes place in the kitchen, in the parents' bedroom, and especially hidden from the eyes of others. Who from which schools are coming? Whose relationship drama ends with someone locking themselves in the bathroom? What was the secret ingredient that made house parties feel euphoric back then, even without any alcohol or other substances?

Last year was remembered by the epic cruise ship craziness, but this year will go down in history as the biggest house party Summer. Go put your party top on, this will be the hottest topic of the entire vacation! 

Sideways’ line-up has doubled after adding 25 new names to the line-up. Among the additions are ten new international performers.

The international line-up will be supplemented by the loud and experimental hiphop group Death Grips (US), Panda Bear & Sonic Boom (US/UK) (known from Animal Collective and Spacemen 3), folk, surf music and post-punk to Turkish traditional music combining Gaye Su Akyol (TR) and A Tribe Called Quest power-house Ali Shaheed Muhammad (US) together with the multi-instrumentalist Adrian Younge (US).

Sideways’ own house band Ruusut will perform a special show ”Melankolia Live”.

Other international additions are latex covered dreampop duo Desire (US), dark folk performing Emma Ruth Rundle (US), a sold-out show in Helsinki performed pianist Hania Rani (PL), and a requested comeback to Finland offering synth-punk band Kælan Mikla.

Improvisation mastering Irreversible Entanglements (US) and Supersilent (NO) bring a variety of jazz to Sideways, and psychedelic tequila cumbia combined with rock quitars will be showcased by Los Bitchos (UK).

Domestic know-how are brought to Nordis by Samuli Putro, Business City and Sin Cos Tan. Rap selection is supplemented by a great bunch: Hassan Maikal, Ege Zulu, Nelma U, Stepa & Heimo ilman menneisyyttä and Tre-Funk III. And to the friends of honest guitar music we have Radiopuhelimet, Maan Tomu, Stoned Statues and moshimoshi waiting for you.

Sideways’ line-up will be doubled next Tuesday, January 31st at 10am, when a great bunch of new name will be added to the music program. The prices of 2 and 3-day tickets will increase at the same time.

While announcing the new and interesting live acts, the price of our 2-day ticket will rise from 140 to 150 euros and 3-day ticket from 165 to 179 euros. Until then tickets are sold for early bird prices.

Early bird prices are valid until Tuesday 31st of January at 9.59am.

Interpol and Anna Puu, among others, have been added to the music programme of Sideways, which will take place at Nordis in Helsinki on 8-10 June 2023. All ticket types are now on sale. 

Interpol, making their much-anticipated return to Finland, are one of the most important indie rock acts of the 21st century. The New York band, known for their dark-toned music, was last seen in Finland 15 years ago and in recent concerts they have played material from their "Antics" and "Turn On The Bright Lights" albums in particular. Their latest album "The Other Side Of Make-Believe" was released last year, and yes, Interpol is among the pioneers of their genre.

Also performing at Nordis will be Taiwanese synth pop group Sunset Rollercoaster, arriving in Finland for the first time and being on the rise, as well as electronic music pioneer Suzanne Ciani, whose music was enjoyed by a sold-out Temppeliaukio Church last autumn.

Fans who are eagerly waiting for more festival action will have their needs met when Anna Puu arrives to the Sideways stage for the first time. The artist, who has had a long career in Finnish pop, is currently working on their new album to be released next year. The domestic line-up will also be strengthened by Ursus Factory, dubbed to be one of the best Finnish live brawlers, and recent Emma nominee Antti Autio, who returns to Sideways with a string orchestra.

The dates for Sideways are now announced for the selected artists. Phoenix and Fever Ray will perform on Thursday night, Interpol on Friday night and M83 on Saturday. Concert dates for the remaining confirmed artists will be announced in early 2023.

The first acts for Sideways, which will take place at Nordis in Helsinki from 8-10 June 2023, have now been announced.  Tickets for next summer's festival are now on sale and the discounted three-day Flash Sale tickets are on sale today, Thursday 1 December, until 23.59.

Some promising hints of the whole international line-up for the upcoming festival will be provided by indie rock greatness Phoenix (FR), who is returning to Helsinki after almost 20 years and has previously been seen for example as a headliner at Coachella. Other international acts to be announced include Karin Dreijer's solo project Fever Ray (SE), who’s known from the Knife, and the Grammy-nominated M83 (FR), who has returned from a long absence from the stage with his almost one billion-streamed hit "Midnight City". Phoenix's new album "Alpha Zulu" was released earlier this month, and according to preliminary reports, Fever Ray and M83 are also set to release new albums in the near future.

And of course there will also be some domestic acts as well! Bringing home-grown talent to Nordis, Arppa will play their only festival show in Helsinki, electronic music pioneer Huoratron will top off one of the festival nights on the Black Box stage, guitar group Teksti-TV 666, a mix of shoegaze and kraut, is currently working on new music, and Malla is making a return to Sideways for their upcoming second album. 

Generational experience pehmoaino, Isaac Sene, who hypnotizes us with soulful nuances, and lyrical songwriter Lyyti, will bring a fresh take on Finnish pop to Sideways. The festival will also feature a gritty live performance by saxophonist Linda Fredriksson, one of the leading performances of Finnish jazz, and a new wave rapper Sexmane. 

Cult band Plutonium 74 will be seen on stage as well as Aavikko, who have been captivating audiences for almost 30 years. Indie newcomer Knife Girl and one of the most promising new finnish rock bands  Bad Sauna will be making their first appearances at Sideways, while Lähiöbotox, who combines rap music with heavy, will be bring some old hand experince to the festival.

As usual, more artist and programme announcements will be made throughout the winter and spring, and you'll be the first to hear the latest news. See you in June, right?

Sideways 2023 will be organized again at Nordis area from Thursday to Saturday, on June 8-10. The festival's special-priced 3-day Friendly Bird tickets are on sale for only 48 hours at a special price of 129€.

This is the cheapest price at which Sideways 2023 tickets will ever be sold.

Friendly Bird tickets will go on sale on Monday, June 20, 2022 at 12:00 noon and end on Wednesday morning at 11:59 a.m.

We encourage you to exchange your ticket to a wristband in advance. Exchange is possible at HAM museum at Tennispalatsi and at Nordis. At both exchange places 3 and 2-day (Thu-Fri) tickets are exchanged to wristbands before the festival.

Please note, that 2-day (Fri-Sat) ticket change starts at Nordis on Friday 17th. One day tickets are not exchanged to wristbands.

Tickets can of course be exchanged at Nordis when you arrive at the festival, but the avoid unnecessary traffic, we recommend to do it in advance.

This Summer’s range of drinks is finally announced. In addition to the classics, exquisite alcohol-free drinks are served at every bar.

Brooklyn Brewery is once again our beer partner, serving cold ones for you all weekend. For those who cannot make up their mind, a tasting platter is also available. Brooklyn offers also the ability to get a tattoo while grabbing a beer!

X-Berg brings a carefully selected range of wines, alongside wine of the day for each festival day. In addition to the X-Berg Wine Bar there will also bee the MUK-1 wine truck, wine bicycle and a wine cart.

We’ve wanted to invest in serving alcohol-free and low alcoholic drinks while that seems to be the fast-growing trend. Phenomenal low & no drinks are mixed by Seedlip Bar and Kåska Low & No Bar.

Summery cocktails are also served around the main stage by Kyrö Distillery Bar, Mojito Bar, Highball Bar and Schweppes.

Sideways’ versatile selection of sideshows is now even larger.

As usual, the festival offers interesting panel discussions. This year the discussions are brought to you by the feminist magazine Tulva. Panelists will discuss the relationship between music industry and sexual minorities, as well as the #metoo movement.

Radio Helsinki will do live radio at the festival area. The programs Kotibileet and Njassa can be heard live at Nordis while spinning the wheel of fortune. The radio station YleX brings Kohupodi podcast, hosted by Sini Laitinen and Renaz Ebrahimi, to Sideways and discusses the music industry’s scandals interactively with the audience.

If speaking is more your thing than listening, Puhekaraoke (speaking karaoke) is the hing for you. Living memes coming up. And if physical memories and workshops sound like a thing for you, we recommend you to try the Midsummer Printing Studio, where you can print a T-shirt with natural dyeing colors.

Like before, the Sideways area will be filled with art. The street art collective Mimmit peinttaa will decorate the surroundings like on previous years. “Soundshrooms” allows you to create a summer soundscape by touching shroomy objects. Kira Orkasalo’s UV art will guide the audience to the Basement stage, and Meri Nyman’s deliciously colored artworks delight in the icehall.

Sideways partnered with the city of Helsinki in an innovation challenge through which Frame Rate has prepared an immersive “MUTATIONS” installation that lets people create their own song together with the artwork itself. Stereoscape, that also participated in the challenge, has developed Instagram filters that makes the festival experience even better with elements of augmented reality. Filters will be published soon!

Sideways has announced this Summer’s delicious restaurant selection that will take customers for a journey around Asia, Mexico, Northern Africa and so on! From this year on, all food vendors will only serve vegetarian and vegan food. We strongly recommend to arrive hungry.

Helsinki’s best taco place Lopez y Lopez is finally bringing their rewarded restaurant to festival surrounding. Musician and pizza lover Lieminen arrives with his New York style Crusty Pizza food truck.

Green Burger serves artisan burgers and Omatsuri Sushi rolls fresh sushi platters. In a smaller hunger or sweet tooth ache you’ll get help from our Sweet & Salty waffle and tapas place. Loaded Fries Bar therefore serves the best fries complemented with either Mexican or Asian flavors.

For the first time, we have the pleasure to welcome the Philippine cuisine masters from Paisano and Ethiopian food serving Addis Ethiopian Kitchen to Sideways.

Fat Ramen is famous for their amazing ramen dishes, and the newcomer HALLANA prepares fresh salads and sourdough toasts.

Two of our customers’ favorites Thai Papaya and Levant are also making a comeback to Sideways. In addition to the restaurants, there will be plenty of snacks served in the Ice Hall. They have also launched a new vegetarian kiosk.

Sideways’s festival line-up has gotten two amazing, international additions – one of the greatest alternative rock bands Dinosaur Jr. (US) and electronic music visionary Floating Points (UK) will both play Sideways next Summer!

Dinosaur Jr. will play music from the spectrum of their over 30-year career, and Floating Points’ live show will take place in the atmosphere of the Black Box.

As opposed to what has previously been announced, Mac DeMarco and Oneohtrix Point Never will not perform at Sideways festival due to cancellation of their European tours.

We would not have wanted to write this message but unfortunately in the situation the world is in we were left with no choice: It is with great sadness that we must announce that Sideways festival can’t be held this summer.

We were hopeful until the end and hoped that vaccines would provide a sufficient protection before the summer. No stone was left unturned when we looked at possible ways of organizing Sideways safely and responsibly. However, we were left with no other choice than admit that the fight against the corona virus is still in progress.

The Finnish authorities have also set restrictions that are in effect at least until June, which is when Sideways was supposed to take place. Under these restrictions the festival experience would have not been in line with what we think it is supposed to be – We want to offer the visitors the freedom to move freely in- and outdoors enjoying interesting live and culture programs. Nevertheless, despite the impact of the restrictions on the event, we give our full support to the Finnish Government and authorities with their work to prevent the spread of the corona virus.

We now turn our attention to the future: Sideways will be held at the familiar surroundings of Nordis from June 16^th to 18^th 2022.

If you have purchased a ticket for 2020 or 2021 your ticket is automatically valid for 2022. You don’t have to take any action - Just keep your ticket safe and get ready for next year’s festival! Also returning your ticket is of course possible. More info can be found on our website.

The program of Sideways 2022 will be announced later. Unfortunately, we are not yet able to provide more detailed information about the performers or the schedule of the first program release.

We have been working hard for months to make Sideways happen in 2021 after last year’s cancellation, and to create a better festival experience than ever to make up for the incredibly tough year we have all had.

As we all know by now, the future of festivals regarding this upcoming summer is still unsure, to say the least. Regardless of this, until the authorities announce the summer restrictions and the possible reduction in infection rates due to safety measures and the vaccine, we will continue to work towards making the festival happen.

We have joined forces across the entire event industry and are working closely with different authorities to ensure a safe and responsible festival summer – when the infection rates allow it. We are aware of the current situation and the uncertainty of the upcoming festival summer. However, as long as there is hope in organizing Sideways, we choose to believe in a brighter future.

Our priority is to organize a responsible festival. If all goes well, we will announce more additions to our music program, side-shows that are  presenting different forms of art and culture, and restaurant selection during the forthcoming spring. If however, COVID-19 prevents us from organizing Sideways once again, you can count on us that you will be the first to know.

If you have bought a Sideways ticket and you desire to keep it for 2021, no action is needed - you are ready for Sideways 2021! All 1 and 2 day tickets can be exchanged once for another ticket in the same price category until 31st of March 2021. In case you are not certain about attending Sideways 2021 and you would like to return your ticket, it is also possible to apply for refund at the same ticket office where you have originally purchased your Sideways festival ticket.

According to the decision made yesterday by the Finnish government and health authorities, all large-scale events in Finland will be banned until July 31^st 2020 to prevent corona virus from further spreading. With heavy hearts we have to announce that there will be no Sideways Festival this year.

We are heartbroken and sorry for everyone who was looking forward to this year’s festival. We want to specifically thank you for all the love and support we’ve received over social media and by email in the course of this spring. We will get through this together and will together make next year bigger and better than ever before!

As of now we’ll direct our focus on year 2021. Artist discussions have already been started and our goal is to make next year’s program the best ever in the history of Sideways.

Sideways 2021 dates will be announced as soon as possible and we hope to be able to share first news about summer 2021 artists at the same time.

We are currently figuring out the best ways for our customers to deal with the purchased tickets. All details, including ticket refunds and possibilities to transfer tickets to next year will be announced simultaneously with the new festival dates. Ticket refunds will be possible after the announcement, so we kindly advise you not to contact ticket retailers before that. The Finnish government has today, on April 22nd 2020, advised that all events of over 500 persons should be banned at least until July 31st 2020.

The safety and health of our guests, artists, volunteers, employees, partners and every person on this planet is unquestionably important to us and we are thankful to the authorities for engaging in securing our future.

We are currently exploring different options with Sideways and will inform about any decisions as soon as possible.

Sideways Festival team

The Finnish health authorities have enforced bans on events with more than 500 visitors due to the continuous spread of COVID-19. 

The guidance given today does not extend until the start of Sideways, so currently all festival arrangements are proceeding normally for the time being. Based on this information, Sideways 2020 will be organized as planned.

In case Sideways will be cancelled, our guests are of course entitled to a refund for the ticket price.

Please note that we have not received any message from Sideways artists that they would be planning of canceling their performances.

We will inform about the possible updates on Sideways' website and our social media channels.

We are now looking for eager volunteers to make the festival happen with us! As a volunteer you will help Sideways to create a successful and memorable festival. You will also get valuable experience while working behind the scenes and get to know other like-minded people.

Deadline for applications is in mid-May. Note that the earlier you'll send your application, the better chances you have to be chosen for the task you wish for.

Here's a late Christmas presents for you all: Finnish alternative rock / metal music pioneers Xysma will reunite next summer and perform at Sideways festival. In addition legendary hardcore punk group Terveet Kädet, also recently reunited, have been confirmed for Sideways 2020 bill.

Sideways 2020 early bird tickets are available until 6th of January for the cheaper price 125€.

Couple weeks ago we announced first artists for Sideways 2020, and now we are pleased to add more name to the festival bill.

UK-based singer-songwriter and folk star Passenger has written one of the biggest hits of the decade. In addition to his 10 solo albums, Passanger is best known for multi-platinum song ”Let Her Go”. The track has been streamed on Youtube 2,5 billion times and also on Spotify over 1 billion times.

Passenger’s latest album ”Sometimes It's Something, Sometimes It's Nothing at All” was released in spring 2019.

Sideways, organized at Nordis area in the center of Helsinki, have announced the first acts for next summer festival's line up. At the same time we'll start the Early Bird phase: 3 days tickets cost 125€, and the cheaper tickets are available until 6th of January at www.lippu.fi/sideways.

Lumo homes, one of Sideways' headliner partners, bring house party vibes to Sideways area with their signature kitchen, livingroom and "powder corner". These elements are available during all three festival days.

As everybody knows, the best party is always in the kitchen. Lumo Kitchen with its balcony is located opposite to Aurora stage, and visitors are invited to enjoy little snacks and great view. Lumo's cozy livingroom can be found in the middle our Sideways' food court – chill and relax with your friends. The third element Powder Corner is next to water station in main stage yard – take your time and upgrade your festival looks with provided make ups like in boudoir. 

Register with Lumo at Sideways, and you'll get some additional extra bonus while visiting Lumo's Sideways activities. More information from staff wearing Lumo's shirts.

We kindly ask that Sideways audience would travel festival site Nordis by public transportation, bicycle or with their feet. Note that there are traffic construction going on in Töölö district so please reserve enought time.
 

PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION
Closest trams (lines 2, 3, 4, 10) and several buses stop just 2 minutes away from Sideways main gate. Check traffic route planner www.reittiopas.fi – type your destination ”Helsingin jäähalli” (in english: Helsinki Ice Hall).

WALKING
It is only 1,5-2km (15-20 min walk) from Helsinki city center, Pasila train station and Kallio Distict. 

BICYCLE
As much as we recommend bycycling, the Töölö districts traffic constructions and extra narrow street have forced us to remove our bicycle parking area. We are very sorry for this – there is nothing we can do about this. Places to park your bicycle near Sideways are Kisahalli sports house, Telia 5G Stadium, Swimming Stadium and Eläintarha park surroundings. The bicycles parked next to our main entrance will be removed.

CITY BIKES AND E-SCOOTERS
Closest City Bike stations can be found in the corner of Mannerheimintie and Messiuksenkatu or close to Swimming Stadium. The station next to Nordis is not in use during Sideways.

Please don't park e-scooters to our front yard or the roads nearby.

PRIVATE CAR
This is the worst option – there is simply no parking space close to Nordis. If you want to spend your day in traffic jam, you should park car in Kisahalli sports house parking lot. 

You can exchange your Sideways 3 day festival ticket into wristband either in selected advance spots or at festival gate. Please note the wristband will be attached to your wrist at service desk so you can't exchange tickets on behalf of your friends.

Sideways' beer selection is built around Brooklyn Brewery's products. We have old time favourites like Brooklyn Lager, Bel Air Sour, Defender IPA plus all latest seasonal tastes.

Sideways have two wine bars, and we recommend especially X-Berg wines – red, white or rosé. Viinitie's staff really know their products so feel free to ask tips based on your taste profile.

There is no summer without tasty mojitos or ice cold cocktails! Check Mojito Bar or Grandstand Bar next to Aurora stage and A. Bar or Kyrö Distillery close to Sideways Stage.

Paris-based Arrache-toi un oeil! bring their gig poster exhibition to Finland for the first time. The arts duo have created artworks to artists like Sunn O))), Propagandhi and The Jesus and Mary Chain.

Paints & Frieds organize arts workshops where you draw nude models while sipping wine. Osteri collective's artistis Sini Pelkki, Taneli Rautiainen, Kati Ruohomäki ja Hermanni Saarinen create a pop up gallery. Mimmit peinttaa ("Girls paint") color festival site with their art pieces.

Sideways have always organized also talks programme. This year our partners are Long Play media, and radio stations Yle Puhe and YleX. Talks about various topics from hip hop culture to podcasts or queer culture to culture politics.

Friday and Saturday nights will end in sing-a-long karaoke. Karaoke 3000's song lists have been strictly curated – only best alternative, indie, hip hop and pop songs available! Produced in co-operation with Eerikinkatu 11 and Singa.

Oulu Music Video Festival bring Music Video Jukebox to Royal Club on Thursday night. More than 5000 classic Finnish music videos available. Hiljaisuuden mestari  ("Master of Silence") offer place for silence and calm, and you may even meet author Miki Liukkonen.

We Jazz's Vinyl Market bring selection of vinyl records from cool indie labels.

One of electro pop scene's bigges names, Hot Chip (UK), will play their first ever concert in Helsinki at Sideways 2019. Synth pop artist Empress Of (US) released her latest album "Us" last fall, and R&B talent Cautious Clay (US) has been compared to names like James Blake and Frank Ocean. 

Other international bookings are garage punk group Amyl and The Sniffers (AU),  Wolf Parade and Moonface frontman Spencer Krug (CA) and experimental electronic music artists Gazelle Twin (UK) and Puce Mary (DK).

Finnish superstar Ismo Alanko celebrates at Sideways the release of his latest album. Other top names in local music scene include hip hop artist Asa & Band, ”Steely Dan and Ariel Pink in same packet” Jaakko Eino Kalevi, art pop duo Color Dolor and R&B-talent Jesse Markin.

Also indie rock rising star The Holy, rap artist Versace Henrik's punk-bändi Henrik!, new wave group Linkopii sekä groovy schlager band Muuan mies will be seen at Sideways 2019.

Sideways 2019 artist Lizzo (US) is forced to cancel her performance due to other commitments happening in the same time in USA. 

Vesta's concert has been moved from Thursday to Saturday. 

We are extremely proud to announce the world exclusive show in 2019 for Waste of Space Orchestra, psychedelic metal band featuring members of Oranssi Pazuzu ja Dark Buddha Rising. 

Syntheosis began as a commissioned piece for Roadburn Festival. The fest, which began as a small-scale gathering of stoner rock addicts has evolved over the years into a four-day celebration of heavy music in all of its possible forms and interpretations, from riff-worship to punishing soundscapes and beyond. The list of Roadburn performers over the years is a veritable who’s who of underground heavy culture, with everyone from  Neurosis and Sleep to Godflesh having performed at the event.

Syntheosis the commissioned piece was prepared at the request of the festival and performed there in April 2018 in front of over 3000 people. Syntheosis the album is not a live recording but a carefully prepared studio interpretation, on which the ten musicians worked over the spring and summer of 2018. The album was recorded and mixed by Julius Mauranen, who also worked on Oranssi Pazuzu’s Värähtelijä. The album can be digested as a challenging, engaging psych metal record or as a dimension-spanning one-hour performance consisting of nine parts. The work recounts a story of three beings and their deep search for knowledge.
